Netflix is ending one of its first forays into the topical talk-show genre, and with it, the number of female hosts in this space will be reduced by one. “Chelsea,” the program hosted by Chelsea Handler, will not continue after its current second season; in a statement posted on her Twitter account, Ms. Handler said that she was ending the series to focus on political activism, travel the country and work on a new Netflix documentary project.

“Like so many across the country, the past presidential election and the countless events that have unfolded since have galvanized me,” Ms. Handler wrote in her statement. “From the national level down to the grassroots, it’s clear our decisions at the ballot box next year will mark a defining moment for our nation.”

Ms. Handler previously hosted the E! late-night talk show “Chelsea Lately” from 2007 to 2014. Her Netflix series, which had its premiere last year, was an unusual proposition for the streaming service, which does not adhere to a traditional daily programming schedule and tends to release its shows in binge-able, season-long bursts.

In its first season, three episodes of “Chelsea” were released each week; in its second season the frequency was lowered to one episode a week. Ms. Handler said in her statement that new episodes of the show would continue to run through the end of the year. She would also create a new nonfiction project for Netflix, she said, “where I’ll engage with people I don’t talk with enough — people of different ethnicities, religions and political philosophies.”

Netflix is continuing to develop other talk shows, and announced in August that it would show a new series hosted by David Letterman, the longtime NBC and CBS late-night star, planned for next year.
