Our guide to stand-up, improv and variety shows.
DEL CLOSE MARATHON (June 23-25). Now in its 19th year, this weekend of improv comedy brings together some of the best comedic performers from around the world for a hectic, overheated, giddy marathon of shows. Named for the famed Second City instructor Del Close, the marathon begins with a news conference with the founding members of the Upright Citizens Brigade: Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh. Tickets for some individual shows are on sale, including a variety show starring Bobby Moynihan, who recently left the cast of “Saturday Night Live,” and special improv shows from the Curfew, the Stepfathers and Gravid Water.
‘THE INNER-BEAUTY PAGEANT’ at Littlefield (June 25, 8 p.m.). The comedian Jo Firestone presents the sixth yearly installment of this innovative twist on a traditional beauty pageant, in which 12 comedians and other brave souls compete for the title of New York’s most inner beautiful. As part of the show, held in Littlefield’s new location, on Sackett Street, each contestant will participate in an interview, a talent demonstration and a homemade-swimsuit competition. The winner will be selected by the audience via secret ballot.
‘OPHIRA AND ADAM’S SCAR TISSUE’ at Union Hall (June 27, 8 p.m.). Ophira Eisenberg and Adam Wade will join forces for this night of heartfelt stories united by the theme of scar tissue. Ms. Eisenberg, host of the NPR quiz show “Ask Me Another,” is a popular stand-up and raconteur, equally skilled at short, sharp jokes and carefully planned stories. Mr. Wade, a 20-time winner of Moth storytelling competitions, is one of the most popular spinners of yarns in New York City, with a knack for heart-rending but cautiously optimistic tales.
‘REDUCTRESS WET’ at the Bell House (June 29, 8 p.m.). The comedy website Reductress, which satirizes women’s magazines and blogs, presents this night of stand-up, hosted by Nicole Silverberg, an editor at large. Performers include Kate Berlant, who starred in her own episode of Netflix’s “The Characters” and in February performed on “The Tonight Show”; Janelle James, who has appeared on the Seeso show “Night Train With Wyatt Cenac” and on Comedy Central’s “@midnight”; Blair Socci, who has appeared on the MTV show “Ladylike”; and Anna Drezen, a writer for “Saturday Night Live.”
