Brace yourself. A parody is coming.
A spoof of “Game of Thrones,” the HBO drama, will have a three-week run Off Broadway this October. “Game of Thrones: The Rock Musical — An Unauthorized Parody” is the latest theater show to piggyback off the success of a pop-culture phenomenon. In June, “Spamilton” moved a block away from the Richard Rodgers Theater, where “Hamilton” plays. There is also “Puffs,” an Off Broadway play that is a sendup of the Harry Potter universe.
This “Games of Thrones” production debuted in February at the Macha Theater in Los Angeles, and had a run of eight shows in San Diego. It will be onstage at the Jerry Orbach Theater at the Theater Center in Manhattan from Oct. 10 through Oct. 29. The show revisits the first season of “Thrones,” which sets the table for the conflict that has caused the upheaval in Westeros over seven seasons. Its timing is ideal for fans of the show and books: This season’s finale is on Sunday and the eighth and final season is due next year.
This rock parody’s creators, Steven Christopher Parker and Steven Brandon, previously worked together on a musical based on “Lost.” Mr. Parker is also an actor who appeared in “Juno” and had a recurring role in “ER.” Mr. Brandon was behind multiple theater productions in Australia, including “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “Urinetown.”
