Carlos Muñoz Portal, a location scout for the Netflix series “Narcos” was found shot dead in Mexico, El País reported on Sunday.

An unnamed friend of Mr. Muñoz, 37, told the Spanish newspaper that he saw the scout on Sept. 11, before he headed toward the state of Mexico to take some photographs for the series. Hours later that day, his body was found with multiple gunshot wounds in his car on an unnamed dirt road not far from Mexico City.

According to El País, Netflix confirmed Mr. Muñoz’s death, and a spokesman for the attorney general of the state of Mexico said there are no witnesses of the killing.

“Narcos” is a crime drama about the gritty wars of the 1980s between drug kingpins and law enforcement agencies, set mostly in Colombia. The first three seasons focused on Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel in that country. But the ending of the third season heavily hinted that the show’s fourth season would turn toward Mexico.

Mexico is in the midst of its deadliest year. According to Al Jazeera, Mexican authorities recorded more than 2,200 murders nationwide in June — the highest for a single month in 20 years.

Mr. Muñoz had worked on several productions known to American audiences including “Man on Fire,” “The legend of Zorro,” “Apocalypto,” and the James Bond film “Spectre.”
