New Trailer: ‘Annihilation’ Puts Natalie Portman in Danger

Alex Garland follows up his 2015 directorial debut, “Ex Machina,” with another creepy sci-fi drama featuring Oscar Isaac. Only in “Annihilation,” Mr. Isaac’s character vanishes early on, during a mission into an environmental danger zone, and his wife, played by Natalie Portman, leads an expedition to save him.

Identified as the Biologist, Ms. Portman’s character is accompanied by the Psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the Anthropologist (Gina Rodriguez from “Jane the Virgin”) and the Surveyor (Tessa Thompson from “Westworld”). The teaser hints at an ominous otherworldly presence that makes contact with the team in the jungle.

Based on the best-selling novel by Jeff VanDerMeer and set for release on Feb. 23, “Annihilation” bears some surface similarities to “Arrival,” another female-centric alien saga. That one was a hit with both critics and audiences. Will Mr. Garland’s movie find similar success?
