Sens. Bob Corker, R-Tenn.

Tennessee Republican Bob Corker sparred with President Donald Trump on Sunday, with the president blaming the GOP senator for a controversial deal with Iran, and implying Corker sought his endorsement for reelection.

Trump and Corker were once allies, but tensions between the two have risen in recent months, amid a series of policy and personal differences that have spilled into the open.

In a series of tweets, Trump said that he declined to endorse Corker’s re-election campaign or consider Corker for Secretary of State, blaming him for “the horrendous Iran Deal.” Corker announced last month that he would not seek re-election because he wanted to be able to perform his public service independently for the remainder of his term.

Corker blasted the White House in response, tweeting that it had become an “adult day care center” and deriding that someone “missed their shift.”

Corker, like Trump, has roots as an entrepreneur in the construction and real estate industry, and is chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and a member of the Banking Committee and the Budget Committee.

Corker publicly slammed an version of Obama-era nuclear agreement in 2015. But reports from outlets like Politico indicated that as a top-ranking senator in the foreign relations committee, Corker was involved in a complex and delicate set of negotiations with Democrats.
