The Killers Are Latest Band to Hit No. 1 Thanks to Sales, Not Streaming

The Killers are the latest rock band to top the Billboard album chart with CD sales helped by a ticketing bundle, but weak streaming numbers.

“Wonderful Wonderful” (Island), the band’s fifth album, has become the Las Vegas group’s first No. 1 LP with the equivalent of 118,000 sales in the United States, including 111,000 sold as a full album and 6.8 million streams, according Nielsen. (Recent albums by LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire have followed a similar pattern.)

Also this week, Macklemore’s “Gemini” (Bendo) — his first album in more than a decade without the producer Ryan Lewis, with whom Macklemore shared the Grammy Award for best new artist in 2014 — opened at No. 2, with 27,000 albums sold and 24 million streams.

The rapper Lil Uzi Vert fell one spot to No. 3 with “Luv Is Rage 2,” which has been holding high on the chart since it came out five weeks ago. Another rapper, Kevin Gates, is in fourth place with a new mixtape, “By Any Means 2,” and the R&B singer Jhené Aiko opened at No. 5 with her album “Trip” (Def Jam).

Foo Fighters’ “Concrete and Gold,” which opened at No. 1 last week, fell to No. 17 in its second week out, with its sales down 82 percent. And Cardi B, who unseated Taylor Swift from the top of the singles chart last week, is still No. 1 on the Hot 100 with “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves).”
