THE BIRTH OF A NATION (2016) 8 p.m. on HBO. Nate Parker directed and stars in this dramatization of the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in Virginia in 1831, a movie that earned ovations and a lucrative distribution deal at the Sundance Film Festival. Several months later, details emerged about a sexual assault case involving Mr. Parker when he was a student at Pennsylvania State University in 1999, leading to public rejections of the film. “My job is not to be your surrogate conscience,” A. O. Scott wrote in The New York Times. “Nor is it my job to judge Mr. Parker, except as the author and star of this film.” In the context of Hollywood history, he added, “Mr. Parker is less a revolutionary than a revisionist, adapting old strategies to new purposes.”
2017 AMERICA’S CUP 1 p.m. on NBC. Oracle Team USA, the defending champion, sails against Emirates Team New Zealand, which leads in the standings, in the fifth and sixth races (of a possible 13) in the Great Sound of Bermuda. In “NITRO WORLD GAMES,” at 8, more than 80 athletes show off their best tricks in freestyle motocross, bicycle motocross, skateboarding and scooter in Salt Lake City.
THE ESSENTIALS: TINA FEY 8 p.m. on TCM. Ms. Fey begins a seven-week guest spot alongside Alec Baldwin, the series’s host, for some must-see movie viewing. First: Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” (1954), one of her 11-year-old daughter’s favorites.
