“Star Trek: Discovery” introduces new faces in a different era, but retains the same overarching themes. And Spencer and Joe land promising deals in the Season 3 finale of “Ballers.”

What’s on TV

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY 8:30 p.m. on CBS. This long-awaited iteration of the “Star Trek” franchise is set a decade before the original series of the 1960s. The United Federation of Planets has fashioned a near-utopia, but its peace is threatened by the hostile Klingons, a humanoid warrior species. The crew answers to Starfleet First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green, “The Walking Dead”), a protégé of Spock’s father, the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek. In an interview with The New York Times, one of the creators, Alex Kurtzman, said this series could “live in the nuance and moral quandary that you don’t have time for in the films.” Episodes after the first will be available on the network’s streaming service, CBS All Access.

TEEN WOLF 8 p.m. on MTV. The fierce werewolf hunter Gerard (Michael Hogan) teams up with the Anuk-Ite, an invisible entity, to rid Beacon Hills of the protagonist Scott (Tyler Posey) and the rest of the town’s supernatural creatures.

LEGION OF BROTHERS (2017) 9 p.m. on CNN. Immediately following the Sept. 11 attacks, the American military deployed less than 100 soldiers from its elite Green Berets unit to Afghanistan on a secret mission to overthrow the Taliban, hunt down Osama bin-Laden and weaken Al Qaeda. Some of those soldiers look back on their traumatic experiences in this documentary by Greg Barker, sharing their stories with a tinge of pride, sorrow and regret. The subject matter is a lot to tackle, and while the documentary doesn’t offer many clarifying details, Ken Jaworowski wrote in The Times, “Mr. Barker doesn’t disregard the frustration and confusion that go hand-in-hand with bravery and dedication.”

BALLERS 10 p.m. on HBO; also on HBO streaming platforms. Spencer (Dwayne Johnson) and Joe’s (Rob Corddry) shaky plan to move the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas looks up in this Season 3 finale. Ricky (John David Washington) sets his eyes on a new chapter after a concussion strips him of a deal with the New England Patriots. And Jason (Troy Garity) offers Charles (Omar Benson Miller) a second chance on a new role.

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE (1937) on Mubi. This film noir classic by the German-Austrian director Fritz Lang upholds his works’ recurring theme: the fight against one’s own (often bleak) destiny. Henry Fonda portrays Eddie, a three-time convict who wants to set his life straight and raise a family with his wife, Joan (Sylvia Sidney), the public defender’s secretary. After landing behind bars with a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit, Eddie is pardoned just as he attempts to escape. But panic and paranoia drive him to murder a prison chaplain on his way out, and the couple have no choice but to go on the run. The message? No matter how much we resist, fate catches up to us.
