What’s on TV

AT HOME WITH AMY SEDARIS 10:30 p.m. on truTV. The actress and comedian Amy Sedaris (“BoJack Horseman,” “Strangers With Candy”) demonstrates her unorthodox homemaking skills with the help of oddball characters in this new comedy series. “I look at it like a super stew that’s been in the making for 20 years,” she said of the show in an interview with The New York Times. In this premiere, Ms. Sedaris prepares a meal of fish and lamb chops for “dull businessmen” (played by Paul Giamatti, Todd Barry and Josh Hamilton), but not before cheerfully explaining: “Typically, I don’t associate with businessmen. I’ve never held a white-collar job and I’m never going to. But I accept that the world is run by businessmen and at some point you’ll probably find yourself forced to entertain one.”

JACK WHITEHALL: AT LARGE (2017) on Netflix. The British actor and comedian Jack Whitehall (“Decline and Fall”) brings his energetic stand-up to the Hammersmith Apollo in London in this new special. He argues why the elderly should be free to use recreational drugs and jokes about the differences between British and American culture: “Four glasses of wine with dinner in America, you’re an alcoholic. Four glasses of wine with dinner in Britain, you’re the designated driver!” Mr. Whitehall also stars in TRAVELS WITH MY FATHER on Netflix, a series that follows him and his staid father on a bonding trip across Southeast Asia.

A TOUCH OF SIN (2013) on iTunes, Amazon and Fandor. This drama by the filmmaker Jia Zhangke follows four characters’ separate battles against corruption and injustice in contemporary China. Designating this film a New York Times Critic’s Pick, Manohla Dargis wrote, “It has the urgency of a screaming headline but one inscribed with visual lyricism, emotional weight and a belief in individual rights.”

THE WOODS (2006) on iTunes, Amazon and go90. Set in 1965, this psychological horror film stars Agnes Bruckner as Heather, a teenager with strange powers whose parents leave her at an isolated all-girls school deep in the woods of New England. After meeting the malevolent headmistress (Patricia Clarkson) and her bullying classmates, Heather pleads to return home to no avail. The real torment begins when students mysteriously disappear and Heather begins to have horrific visions, leading her to believe that something ominous lies beyond the school’s walls.
