Mostly Mozart Remixes a Schubert Soiree

The Mostly Mozart Festival is presenting “Schubertiade Remix,” a radical re-creation of the legendary musical soirees in Vienna featuring Schubert and his fellow artists, often hosted by prosperous admirers of the struggling composer. The program’s three M.C.’s — the songwriter and playwright Rick Burkhardt; the playwright and director Alec Duffy; and the composer and playwright Dave Malloy, who wrote the book, lyrics and music for “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” — can rightly claim some expertise in Schubertiades. In 2010, they jointly wrote and performed in “Three Pianos,” the musical play that turned a manic romp through Schubert’s “Winterreise” song cycle into an eerie modern-day Schubertiade. For this “Remix,” with musicians from the International Contemporary Ensemble, the hosts have invited artists from New York’s diverse music scene to write bold new takes on Schubert songs.
