New York Film Festival Selects Titles by Baumbach, Haynes and Gerwig

New movies from Noah Baumbach, Todd Haynes, Greta Gerwig, Richard Linklater, Woody Allen and Agnès Varda are among the 25 films – including eight directed by women – that will be featured in the main lineup of the 55th New York Film Festival this fall.

Several of the pictures garnered healthy buzz at earlier festivals, among them Mr. Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” starring Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller, and Mr. Haynes’s “Wonderstruck,” which will be the New York event’s centerpiece. Those films along with “The Florida Project,” from Sean Baker (“Tangerine”), and “The Square,” by Ruben Ostlund, had their premieres at Cannes before going on to New York. (“The Square” won the Palme d’Or.) Two other selections — Dee Rees’s “Mudbound” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name” — were both Sundance favorites and also count among this season’s more anticipated releases.

In addition to Ms. Rees, the female directors in the main lineup include Ms. Varda, with “Faces Places,” a collaboration with the artist JR, and Ms. Gerwig, with the comedy “Lady Bird.”

As has been previously announced, the festival will open with the world premiere of Mr. Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying,” a sequel of sorts to Hal Ashby’s 1973 film “The Last Detail.” Mr. Allen’s “Wonder Wheel,” set in 1950s Coney Island and starring Kate Winslet, will close the event.
