‘Saturday Night Live’ Premiere to Feature Ryan Gosling and Jay-Z

After a memorable 42nd season, “Saturday Night Live” will return on Sept. 30 with Ryan Gosling as the host and Jay-Z as the musical guest.

The show rode its political satire — with Alec Baldwin as President Trump and Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton and Kellyanne Conway — to its highest ratings in two decades. “Saturday Night Live” was also nominated for 22 Emmys, making it the most-nominated show this year, alongside “Westworld.” The program will look different this season: Three prominent cast members — Vanessa Bayer, Bobby Moynihan and Sasheer Zamata — all bowed out in May. (Mr. Baldwin has said he would return to play Mr. Trump.)

When Mr. Gosling hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2015, his giggly “Close Encounters” skit went viral. The movie “Blade Runner 2049,” in which he stars along with Harrison Ford, will open a week after the broadcast of this new episode.

Jay-Z’s album “4:44” hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts this summer. He’s released several notable music videos for songs on the album, including a remake of “Friends” with a black cast that included Issa Rae and Jerrod Carmichael.
