What’s on TV Saturday: ‘Austin City Limits’ and ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS 11 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). The blues guitarist and Austin native Gary Clark Jr. opens the 45th season of this long-running live concert series, performing music from his latest album, “This Land,” which was a New York Times Critic’s Pick. Later on in the season, music fans can catch hourlong performances from Maggie Rogers, H.E.R. and Vampire Weekend.

MURDER FOR HIRE 6 p.m. on Oxygen. This true crime show, produced by the “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf, explores the sinister world of contract killings. In it, law enforcement officers recount their undercover sting operations that have caught vengeful ex-spouses, disgruntled former co-workers and ruthless criminals seeking out hits. The Season 2 premiere follows the case of Dalia Dippolito, a Florida woman who is serving 16 years in state prison for hiring a hit man to kill her husband. The sting operation, which involved officers staging a murder scene at the couple’s home, was filmed and posted on YouTube by the Boynton Beach Police Department.

GARY GULMAN: THE GREAT DEPRESH 10 p.m. on HBO. Gary Gulman opens this comedy special, his first for HBO, with a set that didn’t make a lot of people laugh. In archival footage from 2017, the comedian steps onto a Boston comedy stage and, shaking, confesses to the crowd that he has “a severe mental illness.” “It’s excruciating,” he says. “This is like a cosmic bottom. This is like a bottom.” After that performance, the comedian spent two years battling depression, a topic that he opens up about in his latest special. In documentary footage interwoven with his stand-up set in Brooklyn, Gulman talks with friends and family about his mental health and his journey to get well. He also uses his time onstage to talk about his experiences with therapy, medication and hospitalization, as well as observations about millennial attitudes, masculinity and his own childhood.

THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1999) Stream on Hulu and Amazon; Rent on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, YouTube and Vudu. As purported fraudsters, hustlers and scammers continue to captivate the collective consciousness, it may be a perfect time to revisit an infamous literary grifter — Tom Ripley. In this film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s psychological thriller, Matt Damon plays the charming impostor, who is hired to track down the wealthy Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) in Italy at the request of Greenleaf’s father. While abroad, Ripley becomes obsessed with Greenleaf’s luxurious lifestyle and begins to slowly take on his identity, turning to violence to keep up his ruse. The film was a New York Times Critic’s Pick, with Janet Maslin writing that Damon played the role “with a fine, tricky mix of obsequiousness and ruthlessness.” It seems right then that Andrew Scott, fresh off his role as the “hot priest” in the Emmy-winning “Fleabag,” is set to star as Ripley in an upcoming Showtime series based on Highsmith’s books.
